In the media, the norm and idea about beauty is pressuring men and women in society, social media and online influencing brings an instant and constant surveillance on how we feel about our bodies. As designer, I am interested in the impact that this idea of 'ideal' has on our lives and our search for the idea of perfection. For centuries beauty captivated and formed our way of living, dressing and cultural context and in today world new role models are created on a daily base.
My collection Re_Contour is responding to this context and searching a more free and individual approach to explore the idea of beauty. I'm searching for alternatives to show the individual body qualities that we so often avoid to showcase. My collection of objects present the contour of the body in a new way, allowing new ideas about shape and application, exploring unknown presentations of our body in public. My objects are interested in the alternative shape, where the user decides what beauty, form and contour means for them.
By using a strong language of geometric and tangible shapes in a variation of materials I developed a collection that contrasts the organic shape of the body, requiring a standing point in how the user could wear the forms.
In my collection, I made use of materials such as glass, marble, copper, foam, rubber, resin and perspex. The material adds an extra quality to the forms and body application through their flexibility, carry weight, temperature, transparency and fragility. Relations and contour are shaped through the play between the wearer and the objects. My internship experience at Jan Taminiau influenced my ambition and I hope to work between the disciplines of fashion and jewellery in a fashion studio or label.
